Nowadays, lithium batteries have strolled in our lives, most of the electronic products contain lithium batteries, such as smart phones often used, EV-car, tws earphones, bluetooth speakers, outdoor portable powers, lighting torch etc., we basically can not leave it. Before understanding lithium batteries, we need to first understand the lithium battery cell.

1.What is A lithium cell?

Generally speaking, it is a rechargeable battery that utilizes reversible intercalation of Li+ ions in a conducting solid to store energy,with carbon material as the anode and a lithium-containing compound as the positive electrode, there is no lithium metal present, only lithium ions, and this is a lithium ion cell.

Two types of lithium batteries are currently very popular, one is cylindrical lithium ion cells, like 18650,26650,21700,32600 etc.

2.What is the working principle of a lithium cell?

1).Disharging Process :

  • When the battery is discharging, the lithium ions move from the anode (negative electrode) to the cathode (positive electrode) through the electrolyte.
  • During this process, the anode material (typically graphite) releases lithium ions and electrons. The electrons flow through the external circuit, generating electric current to power devices, while the lithium ions migrate through the electrolyte towards the cathode.

2).ChargingProcess:

  • When the battery is charging, an external voltage source is applied, reversing the flow of lithium ions.
  • Lithium ions are extracted from the cathode material (usually lithium metal oxides or phosphates) and move back to the anode.
  • At the same time, electrons from the external circuit are forced back into the anode, completing the electrochemical reaction.

3.What is the structure of a lithium cell?

1).Anode (Negative Electrode):

  • The anode is usually made of graphite or other carbon-based materials. Graphite is chosen for its ability to intercalate lithium ions during charging and release them during discharging.
  • It serves as the source of lithium ions during discharge and absorbs lithium ions during charging.

2).Cathode (Positive Electrode):

  • The cathode is composed of lithium metal oxides or phosphates, such as lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2), lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4), or lithium manganese oxide (LiMn2O4).
  • During discharge, the cathode releases lithium ions, which migrate through the electrolyte towards the anode. During charging, the cathode absorbs lithium ions.

3).The separator, typically made of porous materials, prevents direct contact between the anode and cathode to avoid short circuits while allowing the flow of lithium ions.

4.)The electrolyte, a lithium salt dissolved in organic solvents, facilitates the movement of lithium ions between the electrodes.

4.What is A Lithium battery or battery pack?

It consists of multiple individual lithium batteries or cells connected together in a series, parallel, or combination of both to achieve the desired voltage, capacity, and power output. It can be 3.7V,which means it can be one cell with PCM or several cells in parallel to increase the battery capacity, also can be 7.4V,14.8V, 24V,36V,51.2V etc.Battery packs are often enclosed in protective casings and equipped with features such as battery management systems (BMS) to monitor and control the charging and discharging processes, ensuring safe and efficient operation.

While a lithium battery refers to a single cell or unit, a battery pack is a collection of multiple cells arranged in a specific configuration to provide the required voltage, capacity, and power for various applications.

5.The advantages of lithium batteries

Normally, Lithium batteries can be discharged at -20­°C to 60­°C. Sometimes it is necessary to discharge the battery at -40°C or store the battery at 85 40°C as per customers requirements.

6).Versatility and Customization:

1).Lithium Cobalt Oxide (LiCoO2):

  • LiCoO2 is one of the earliest and most widely used cathode materials in lithium-ion batteries, particularly in consumer electronics like smartphones, laptops, and digital cameras.
  • It offers high energy density, making it suitable for applications where compact size and lightweight are essential.
  • However, LiCoO2 batteries have limitations in terms of thermal stability and safety, as they are prone to overheating and thermal runaway under certain conditions. This has led to the exploration of alternative cathode materials with improved safety profiles.

2).Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4):

  • LiFePO4 has gained popularity as a cathode material for lithium-ion batteries due to its enhanced safety, stability, and longevity compared to LiCoO2.
